2011 New Year’s Classic Tournament Results

Thanks for a great weekend. The first tournament is always interesting, and of course, some teams had more success than others. Please understand that we choose to play in the New Year’s Classic because it is local and a great place for our club to be showcased. With it being a smaller event, it’s also a great “first tournament” for many of our young players. However, it does NOT allow the coaches much time to work with their teams since we start in early Dec and have the holiday break to contend with.

We had some very exciting highlights from the weekend. Keep in mind, that I consider these highlights based on the fact that we are a 2nd year club competing against very established clubs. We have a lot of girls who are playing together for the first time this year. With that said, here were some great things from this weekend…

1. All 9 Wolf Pack teams won at least one match on Saturday. Doesn’t sound like a big deal, but it is to me.
2. U17BLACK played in the Gold Championship Match…took 2nd place
3. U13 made the Final 4 and received a 3rd place plaque
4. U15 (Sara) made the Final 4 and received a 3rd place plaque
5. U14 (Nafis) went to the Gold Division after a 2-1 showing on Saturday
6. U16 AND U16BLACK PLAYED IN THE GOLD FINALS AGAINST EACH OTHER! and 16BLACK won!!
7. The Wolf Pack totals for the weekend were 23 wins – 18 losses. Two of those loses were to other Wolf Pack teams too.

FYI…All practices are back to normal this week.

THE WOLF PACK HAD THEIR MOST SUCCESSFUL TOURNAMENT TO DATE THIS WEEKEND AT THE DISNEY CLASSIC IN ORLANDO. THE 16′S MADE IT TO THE GOLD DIVISION AND HAD A WEEKEND RECORD OF 2-2. THE 15′S PLAYED IN SILVER AND WERE 3-2, WHILE THE 14′S WON THE BRONZE DIVISION WITH A WEEKEND RECORD OF 3-2. THE WOLF PACK WAS 8-6 THIS WEEKEND WHICH IS PRETTY IMPRESSIVE FOR A FIRST YEAR CLUB!!!

TAMPA U SLAM IS NEXT AT THE TAMPA CONVENTION CENTER ON APRIL 17-18.

All 2010 Tampa United Kickoff matches will be played at the Tampa Convention Center.

Some additional information:

MOST IMPORTANTLY: Due to incidents in previous years there will be a NO TOLERANCE policy this year for misbehavior by players/teams and spectators in the Tampa Convention Center:

Coolers and outside food and drink are NOT ALLOWED in the convention center. Only water and sports drinks may be brought inside the facility.

In order to comply with the fire marshal, NO ONE WILL BE ALLOWED TO BRING THEIR OWN CHAIRS INTO THE VENUE. We have increased spectator seating from 60 to 70 seats per court to make it possible for all spectators to have a seat.

Violation of these policies or any other general misbehaviors may result
in IMMEDIATE dismissal from the facility for the remainder of the day.

There will be 34 courts in the Tampa Convention Center this year. All matches will be held in the convention center all 3 days. The last matches on Monday will be scheduled at 3pm.

Admission

This year’s event will have a small admission fee for spectators of $8 per day or $15 for a 3-day pass. Children under the age of 8 will have free admission.

Athletes will just need to show their jersey to gain admission to the
Exhibit Hall.

Spectators will be able to purchase a wristband at the door each day, beginning at 7am, that will gain them admission to the playing venue.

The format for the entire tournament will be online and updates or changes will be posted if there are any.

U15’s Take 2nd Place in Gold Division!!!!!!

Parents,

I hope everyone enjoyed their first tournament weekend. As a club, we went 9-8 this weekend with the 15’s winning 6 matches in a row on their way to the finals. Although they lost the final, they had an unbelievable first tournament experience. The 14’s also had a great Sunday winning their first two matches and making it to the final 4 of their bracket. The 16’s also played some tough competition this weekend winning one match on Saturday.

We play again in two weeks so make sure your daughter makes it to all practices in the meantime. Let’s build on this tournament and keep it rolling at the Tampa United Kickoff on President’s Day Weekend.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE U16 WOLF PACK!!!!!

THE U16 WOLF PACK PLAYED IN THE NEW YEAR’S CLASSIC TOURNAMENT AND FINISHED IN 2ND PLACE IN THE U17 GOLD DIVISION THIS WEEKEND. THE GIRLS WENT 4-0 BEFORE LOSING IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. THEY WON A TOTAL OF 8 GAMES AND ONLY LOST 3 THROUGHOUT THEIR 5 MATCHES.

IT WAS A GREAT EXPERIENCE FOR EVERYONE INVOLVED AND THE WEST PASCO CLUB WAS THE TALK OF THE TOURNAMENT. THE GIRLS DEFEATED TWO PINELLAS HEAT TEAMS, ONE WHITESANDS TEAM AND THE MIZUNO BOMBERS DURING THEIR WINNING STREAK.

New Year’s Classic Tournament

Information for this weekend’s tournament.

This tournament is for the U16 team only!

All are welcome to watch and cheer them on.

A few things that you want to take note of are:

Personal coolers are NOT allowed in the Long Center
Spectators will be charged $3 for one day or $5 for a weekend pass
There will be a concession stand as well as a merchandise booth with “New Year’s Classic” shirts/sweatshirts/etc….

The booth is setup by a store called GymRats in Orlando who I have been working with since the start of our club (where I purchased our balls, nets, uniforms, etc…). They are great people and I encourage you to check out their gear.

Please arrive at the long center by 12:00 noon on Saturday.

We have matches at 2pm, 3pm, 5pm and we are responsible to referee/score the 6pm game. I want the girls there early so they have time to get comfortable and watch a match or two.

This is our first club tournament and we’re working to get you all the necessary information in a timely manner. I’ve asked a lot of the girls over this break and they have really stepped up. They have worked hard to learn a new rotation and I am excited to finally get them on the court.

2010 New Year’s Classic Guidelines

ADMISSION

Admission to this year’s event will be $3 per person per day or $5 for a 2-day pass for spectators. Athletes will be able to enter the venue by presenting their jersey. Coaches will be issued a tournament pass or wristband. Spectators will be able to purchase a 2-day pass gaining them admission to the event each day at 7am.

FORMAT

The format for this event will consist of pool play on Saturday followed by bracket play and 3^rd place consolation matches on Sunday. The 13 & under division (5 Team Pool) will conclude pool play on Sunday morning followed by their bracket play.

MATCH LENGTH

All pool play and bracket play will be best of 3 games to 25 points with the deciding game, if necessary, to 15 points. THERE IS NO CAP!!!!! Three team pools will play 3 games to 25, NO CAP!!!!

TIE-BREAKING PROCEDURES

At the conclusion of pool play teams will be ranked for the order of finish based on the following criteria in order without repetition:

Match W/L ratio 2. Head to Head results (if necessary) 3. Game W/L ratio (if necessary) 4. Points W/L ratio (if necessary) 5. Coin flip (if necessary)

*****There will not be any tie-breaking games played*****

WARM-UPS

Warm-up protocol for all matches will be 2-4-4 with 2 minutes shared court, 4 minutes for the serving team and 4 minutes for the receiving team.

FOOD AND DRINKS

The Long Center DOES NOT allow outside chairs or ANY COOLERS inside the building. Coolers will have to remain outside in the courtyard away from exits. We are currently working on having a concession available to sell Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Chicken Sandwiches, chips, water, Gatorade, and candy at the Long Center.

OFFICIALS AND OFFICIATING RESPONSIBILITIES

1st Officials are provided for ALL matches. Each team will need to provide a total of five people to help officiate matches they are assigned to assist with: a 2nd official (R2), two line judges, a scorekeeper, and a visual scorekeeper/libero tracker. A Coach must be on the court at the start of the match to assist their team during their scorekeeping duties.

The Officiating schedule has been assigned for all of the matches on Saturday and Sunday. OUTSIDE OF POOL PLAY, the losing team of the previous match, IS RESPONISBLE TO OFFICATE the next match on the court. There are a few cases where a team will be asked to arrive an hour before their scheduled match time to officiate the previous match or winning team assigned to officiate the next match after their win.

T-SHIRTS AND APPAREL SALES

Gymrats Volleyball will be the tournament t-shirt provider for the New Year’s Classic. They will be located upstairs in the Brighthouse Room near the spectator seating. Please stop by to visit them and see the volleyball apparel they have to offer for the 2010 club season and pick-up a 2010 New Year’s Classic t-shirt.

FORFEITS AND PENALTIES FOR MISSING AN OFFICIATING ASSIGNMENT

Match time (the end of the 10 minute warm-up period) is forfeit time for the competing teams. The tournament director, Mark Foster, is to be called before a forfeit is awarded for any match.

The penalty for missing or being late to an officiating assignment is 1 point per minute with the penalty beginning at the scheduled start time of each match. The protest committee consists of Mark Foster, Kim Foster and Dave Carstenson (Head Official) or Rebecca Carstenson. Protests will be handled immediately!!!!!

INJURIES

The tournament will not have trainers available at the Long Center. However, ice will be available at the facility for injuries. Please make sure to notify the site director of any injuries that may occur.
